Family
The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together. ~Erma Bombeck

The Tie That Binds and Heals: Families' Life Experiences with Mental Illness (Research Study October 2006) Two main goals facilitated this research study: identification of family needs through an exploration of family stressors and coping skills, perceptions of adaptation, and definitions of recovery from the perspectives of family members with a relative experiencing mental illness; and an exploration of availability, family utilization of mental health services, and concepts about causation and recovery of mental illness from the perspectives of family members and mental health professionals.

Thought for Today
Summer is the time when one sheds
one's tensions with one's clothes
and the right kind of day is jeweled
balm for the battered spirit. A few
of those days and you can become
drunk with the belief that all's
right with the world.

Healthy Family Communications
Communication and compromise are important within family relationships. Each person has specific needs and wants -- which conflict often times with other family members needs and wants.
Misunderstanding and conflict often occurs when family members have difficulty in sharing how they are feeling ... here are some suggestions to increase healthy communication ...
You have a voice within your family -- don't hold it in -- share your feelings.
Be mindful that your actions and behaviors reflect what you are trying to express to other family members.
You do not need to apologize for what you feel Morin expressing your needs ... learn to ask and say no in three sentences (1) acknowledgement of the other, (2) I feel ... (3) I want ... or how can we ...
Be respectful of others ... No judging of other family members, no put-downs or name calling.
The Golden Rule: Treat others like you want to be treated.

Wise Mind Connection
You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them.
