Abstract

Two main goals facilitated this research
study: identification of family needs
through an exploration of family
stressors and coping skills, perception
of adaptation, and definitions of recovery from the perspectives of
family members with a relative
experiencing mental illness; and an
exploration of availability, family
utilization of mental health services,
and concepts about causation and
recovery of mental illness from the
perspectives of family members and
mental health professionals. This
research study was comprised of two
phases, both utilizing a qualitative
and a phenomenological research
design using in-person audio taped
interviews with family members and
telephone interviews with mental
health professionals. Phase I of the
study explored the life experiences of
family members in coping, adapting
and managing a relative’s mental
illness. The phenomenological approach
provided an opportunity for family
members to “voice” the essences of
their life experiences with mental
illness through the examination of
their caregiving burdens and self-care
techniques. Phase II of the research
study focused on mental health
professionals’ perspectives of working
with families experiencing mental
illness, such as the challenges and
rewards, availability of services,
training, and stigma. This phase
provided a snap-shot view of the
connection to the person-in-
environment perspective as it
relates to mental health services;
encompassing the reciprocal
relationships and influences between
individuals diagnosed with mental
illness, their families, mental health
professionals, and the social
environment.
